Mints
Mindful inspirations narrated through stories
PROJECT BACKGROUND
Project Mints started with a conversation. One day, a friend of mine of Filipino descent told me that he did not have any local friends when he was studying in secondary school in Hong Kong, even though there were students of many diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The school (Delia School of Canada) was trying to build a harmonious academic environment for both local students and NCSSs. However, they did not have the budget to hire a teacher specifically designated to teach and guide discussions about culture, even though there were so many students from different backgrounds. I thought: What if students could teach each other about their cultures, traditions and histories by themselves?
PROJECT CONCEPT
Mints stands for Mindful Inspirations Narrated Through Stories. Hexagons play a very important role in my project. Hexagons are usually found in honeycomb. They can fit alongside each other perfectly and have strong bonding properties. All of my characters are hexagons of different colors. I want to send the message that everyone is the same shape, just our skin colour may be different.
Mints contains 25 cards in three categories to be used throughout an academic year. (1) Inspiring Stories about cultural difference to motivate mutual understanding (2) Offline quest: students share with each other by writing down or drawing their thoughts, and sticking them on poster boards in their school. (3) Online quest: students share their ideas through media on a mobile app.
